ITESS Mathematics specialisation
Prepare for a career teaching mathematics in international secondary schools with the mathematics specialisation at ITESS. You’ll grow into an engaging, inclusive, and culturally sensitive educator, with the knowledge, skills and experience needed to teach mathematics effectively, including a deep understanding of mathematics across different domains and of mathematical practices and processes.
What’s in it for you:
Gain practical teaching experience in international schools in each year of your studies
Develop a comprehensive understanding of mathematics across different domains, including algebra, geometry, statistics, probability and calculus
Understand mathematical practices and processes including problem-solving, reasoning, mathematical communication, and modelling
Design learning experiences that promote precision, structure and critical thinking
Learn to design and implement lesson plans that are effective for diverse learners and use digital tools appropriately
Acquire strategies for creating inclusive and culturally responsive classrooms
Learn to reflect on your strengths, areas for growth and teaching philosophy to prepare you for a meaningful career
Customise your course and choose from over 100 minors for your elective semester
The programme
The programme is designed to ensure you are prepared for the complexities of teaching international mathematics. It merges mathematical content knowledge with didactic methods, so you develop a thorough understanding of both mathematical concepts and effective teaching strategies.
The course is designed to give you the skills to incorporate technology into your lessons and enhance student engagement and understanding. You’ll work in practical labs such as ‘Developing Number Sense’ and ‘Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics’ that will encourage you to integrate interdisciplinary approaches into your teaching. You’ll design and implement new educational materials, which will promote your understanding of active learning and teach you to think critically about your materials and teaching practices.
Practical approach
The programme is designed to provide a balanced mix of theoretical knowledge and practical experiences, so you are thoroughly prepared you for the complexities of teaching in international school settings. You'll undertake practical assignments that focus on application, reflection and skill refinement. You'll develop the confidence and competence needed to thrive in diverse classrooms by engaging in simulated class lessons where you get feedback from peers and instructors, role play, where you get to adapt your approaches to different teaching contexts, and through multifaceted projects that incorporate different skills and tools needed in the international classroom.
Practical assignments include, for instance:
Classroom simulations with peer feedback
Field-based projects designing lessons that incorporate cultural values and global perspectives
Interdisciplinary projects integrating multiple perspectives into teaching
Research projects such as into how cultures influence probabilistic thinking
Design projects to develop teaching methods that address practical challenges in the international classroom
