“In this master’s we work closely with the field, which means we get to really test out the theory.”

Master Content & Media Strategy

Arrabella Roorda is a master’s student in Content & Media Strategy. Having completed her bachelor in Creative Business, she decided it was time to delve deeper into the field so that she could later take on a strategic or management position.

“Of course I’d already found out a lot about the media industry through my Creative Business studies, but I wanted to know more. I knew a lot about the practical side such as operations and HR, but I wanted more insights into the process as a whole, how it all fitted together and where improvements could be made. It’s not that I’m so creative that I want to come up with everything myself as much as I’m fascinated by finding out what suits a brand. A question growing companies often ask is if everything they’re doing matches their brand. Businesses nowadays generate so much content that it doesn’t follow a single direction and can quickly differ. As I want to have a managing role in these kinds of processes, I decided to take the Master’s in Content & Media Strategy.”

Master’s to supplement the bachelor

“The programme includes individual assignments and lots of teamwork – with other students and with the industry. It’s an aspect I like and there’s lots of good collaboration with the field. Of course, the theory we cover is different to that covered in the bachelor’s and being able to test it out in practice for great clients is an important part of the master’s. For instance, the assignment we’re now working on is to develop a content strategy for Marketing Groningen. Over a longer period of time, we’ve regularly had to meet in Groningen itself and been really involved with the company.”

Content strategy

“The individual assignment we do, which is also our graduation project, provides a lot of insights. You get to choose the company you want to develop a content strategy for, which means you of course have to think carefully about the kind of company you want to work for, see what opportunities those companies offer and that kind of stuff. It means you automatically start asking yourself about the kind of companies you’d like to work for if it was completely up to you. That you can build a nice network for yourself in the process is an added bonus.”

New master’s

“The master’s hasn’t been running for long which means we’ve been able to bring in a lot regarding the curriculum. I also like how the lecturers never see us as just a number; it works well. And the link to the industry means you stay motivated and that’s a good way of getting the most out of it all.”
