“I discovered that change starts with understanding what is really going on.”

"For me, the most important learning outcome is that students learn to look beyond the surface of a problem. I want them to experience that change does not always start with a solution,” says lecturer Lina Dafesh."

Listening to different perspectives

“I experienced that myself during our research into overtourism in Aruba,” Bella explains. “One of my group members is from Aruba, which made the topic feel even more personal to us. We started with the question: Is Aruba still home, or just a playground for tourists?’ By speaking with residents and tourism professionals, I discovered how important it is to listen to the people who are directly affected by the consequences. It taught me to look at a complex issue from different perspectives.”

Learning by engaging in conversations

“During our online panel, everything came together. As the moderator, I learned how to prepare a professional discussion, ask focused questions and make sure everyone had the opportunity to share their perspective. We did not solve the problem, but we did create awareness. That showed me that this can also be an important first step towards change.” Lina adds: “That is exactly what I hope students take away from this project: the confidence to connect theory and practice and to communicate consciously.”
