Chiara Semilia
Business Administration student

Inspired by family to study business abroad, Chiara was drawn to NHL Stenden because of its global perspective and the opportunities she saw for personal growth and exploring different countries. What it’s actually brought her has been so much more: practical skills and a great appreciation for working in a motivating environment.

“I specifically chose to study in the Netherlands because of its progressive education system. The Business Administration programme is extremely dynamic and it’s surpassed my expectations. Working in multicultural teams on real-life situations that both Dutch and international-based companies face provides valuable insights. And I like that although several of my lecturers are industry professionals, they are willing to learn alongside us. This is very different to my experiences in my home country Zimbabwe where formulated structures tend to exist and lecturers were the professionals that knew exactly what was needed to succeed.”

From simulation to reality

“The programme presents countless possibilities for doing what really interests you and it fosters an environment where you are encouraged to develop your confidence and refine your skills, for instance, with simulation games. These games immerse you in a reality where you have to make well-considered decisions in order for the virtual business to succeed. You get to see exactly what the impacts are of risky business moves without a real market actually collapsing.  And you develop financial knowledge and learn to collaborate with others so as to ensure unified business objectives. Throughout the experience, learning from one another is not only appreciated, it’s expected.”

Family motivation

“Where my family in Zimbabwe inspired me to study and work abroad, the family-run business where I did my internship has given me the insights and practical experience I needed to more clearly shape my future and where I want to work. I worked for the family-run wholesalers Krikke as a market research and sales intern conducting comprehensive market analyses and presenting findings that aided strategic decision-making. I also took part in meetings and corporate events and loved being able to align what I had learnt in projects and in lectures with the real world. When self-doubts arose, I talked and worked with the Krikke family. It made a huge difference and helped me appreciate the benefits of working in an environment where people support and motivate each other.”

Next stop: Australia

“My internship showed me how a unified team that works together, works for the good of the company. I really wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for the Krikke family. They helped me develop my skills and realise how I can be of value in my future work. Before my internship, I wasn’t sure where my future stood, but now I’m confident I want to go into sales or human resources. I want to guide and help those around me in the same way I’ve continuously received support, guidance and wisdom. And as I love travelling, I’ve got my sights on the other side of the world and hope I can explore life in Australia some time soon.”
