“We learn how to navigate those nuances that help you better understand our main stakeholder as HR professionals: people.”
Daniella Rodrigues González
International Human Resource Management student

Originally from Venezuela, 20-year-old Daniella spent six years living in Portugal before moving to the Netherlands. Her curiosity and drive to take on new challenges led her to study International Human Resource Management (IHRM) at NHL Stenden. The blend of cultural insight with strategic HR skills, is giving her the knowledge and tools to connect employers and employees with purpose and empathy.

“During high school, I really felt the pressure of not knowing what to do next. I dreamed of studying abroad in an English-speaking environment that would help me grow both personally and professionally, so I decided to reach out to an agency. They introduced me to the Netherlands and soon after I discovered the IHRM programme at NHL Stenden. It instantly resonated with my aspirations, and so far, it has absolutely lived up to my expectations. I appreciate how it balances theory and practice, offering everything from real-life client projects to internships and study abroad opportunities. What stands out to me is NHL Stenden’s commitment to innovation through design-based education, where both students and staff think creatively and push boundaries. Every time I step into class, I experience the international aspect firsthand. Critical thinking is also a must here, as it supports you in the whole process of developing solutions rather than just memorising textbooks.”

Global people, local insight

“The IHRM programme has a strong emphasis on making us aware of the similarities and differences between cultures. We learn how to navigate those nuances that help you better understand our main stakeholder as HR professionals: people. At the same time, we also explore the more strategic, managerial side of HR, which develops our skills to make informed decisions and balance the needs and wants of both employers and employees.”

“My favourite classes so far? Definitely Law and Ethics. The way they’re taught is so engaging, I actually looked forward to those 8 am lectures, which says a lot, because I’m not a morning person! That said, I do feel that some of the content can get a bit repetitive, as a few courses and topics overlap. Beyond the classroom, one of my most memorable moments has been securing my internship. After sending out so many applications and facing a series of rejections, eventually hearing the Head of Talent at one company say they wanted me as their Talent Acquisition Intern literally had me jumping off my chair in excitement! I couldn’t wait to tell my family and friends that I had finally made it.”

Make it your own

“I’m still figuring out exactly what route I want to take in HR, but I know I want to work in an international setting, where people from different backgrounds find their way to connect with others. The programme’s focus on cultural understanding and strategic thinking has given me the tools to move in that direction.”

“To anyone currently choosing a degree, I’d say: do it for yourself! Ask questions, dig deep into your interests, and trust your instincts. Once you find a programme that truly speaks to you, go for it – and enjoy every step of the journey. NHL Stenden has provided me with a platform to grow, to learn, and to build lasting connections. I’m excited to see where this path takes me and what new opportunities lie ahead as I continue my studies and move one step closer to a fulfilling career.”
