"Sitting at home when you know colleagues are running around is not something that comes naturally to a nurse. More than anything, we want to be useful and put our backs into helping when we’re needed. I also saw the same mentality in my third and fourth-year students who were all stuck at home because their internships had been cancelled. In consultation with various Frisian healthcare institutions and the regional training centres Friesland College and Friese Poort, we came up with a plan to support hospitals by taking on patients that didn’t need complex care. You see initiatives being started all over the country for setting up care centres in hotels and nursing homes. If it’s needed, we’ll do the same in the Marrewyk nursing home in Drachten. Third and fourth-year students will care for patients that have been transferred from the hospital for further recovery in the centre. As teachers, we’ll be supervising the project. And more importantly, offering a sympathetic ear to students who hear emotional stories from patients – because those stories will be there. It’s important to get good help in these situations, for both patients and students. We’re already looking forward, looking forward to being ready when the healthcare sector asks.”
