“By constantly working with new teams, I discovered what I’m really good at.”
Katharina Brauel
Alumna bachelor Tourism Management

I’m Katharina, 26 years old and originally from Germany. I studied Tourism Management at NHL Stenden and later completed a master’s degree in International Management and Consultancy in Enschede. Today, I live in Hamburg and have been working as a finance controller for more than three years. If you had told me during my studies that I would end up in finance, I probably wouldn’t have believed you.

What made my studies stand out was the combination of theory and practice. I worked with students from all over the world and quickly realised how much you can learn from people with different backgrounds and perspectives. The intercultural sensitivity course, in particular, had a lasting impact on me. Even now, I work with colleagues from different cultures every day, and those experiences help me communicate and collaborate more effectively.

I felt a sense of belonging from the very first introduction week. That feeling stayed with me throughout my studies. I made friends who supported me through stressful deadlines and celebrated the successes with me along the way. Looking back, I learned that studying is about much more than passing exams. The people around you make a huge difference.

During my degree, I worked with a different project team almost every module. At first, that felt challenging, but it turned out to be one of the most valuable parts of the programme. I learned how to adapt to different personalities, give and receive feedback, and adjust my way of working depending on the situation. Those are skills I still use every day.

I completed my bachelor’s degree during the COVID lockdowns, which motivated me to continue studying and pursue a master’s degree. After graduating, I applied for a wide range of jobs, mostly in HR. Finance had always interested me, but I never expected it to become my career. When I was offered a controlling role, it came as a surprise. Looking back, it turned out to be exactly the right path for me.

My advice to students is simple: make the most of your time at university. Find people who support you, challenge you and celebrate your successes with you. You’ll learn more, grow faster and enjoy the experience so much more together than you ever will on your own.
