Master's in Content & Media Strategy student

Moving to the Netherlands seemed like an easy and logical step for Luca Czarnotta coming from Germany. Having already completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Social Media Systems, he felt he wanted to delve deeper into the research side of content creation.

“I love graphic design and even though design and content creation are important to me, I wanted to be able to build my ideas on stronger scientific insights. This master’s in Content & Media Strategy is a logical continuation of my bachelor’s and I like the idea of an English-taught programme – plus a master’s is more affordable in the Netherlands than in Germany!”

Positive manipulation

“When you look into what’s behind social content, you realize how manipulative it is. That doesn’t sound good at first, but it can be used in a positive way and I want to be able to do that. Our assignments involve looking into which form of media would be best for our content and target audience, whether it’s social media, print content or TV ads. People tend to focus on social media but there’s so much more and I enjoy exploring the different strategies that come with choosing what works, where, how and for who. It’s interesting to see how media works in the broader sense, exploring where the vulnerability lies.”

Group trust

“This master’s has been the first time I felt I could truly trust a group. When you’re doing a master’s, you’re there for a reason. Master’s students have a better idea of where they are heading; they’ve paid a lot of money to be there and want to get the most out of that one, final year of study. And they know how studying works and share the same mindset. I knew it was going to be a stressful year, but I’m here to give it my best and I see the others are committed too. Of course, it helps that the stuff we do is really interesting too!”

“The way this master’s works is that you research a project as a team in the first semester and then another team uses that research in the second semester to develop a strategic brief. So in the first semester you build the foundations and in the second semester you get on with the creative content. Making content is fun to do but it's important that the previous group has really done their research well otherwise you can't come up with solutions that work. There's not a right or wrong solution, it's what works best for you, the client and the target group at that moment. And it's the research that makes the difference. There’s a coherency throughout that means every piece of the project, when it comes together just makes sense.”
