Nena Compagne
During the Tourism Management degree, Nena combined practical work with adventure: from group projects with students from all over the world, to a minor in South Africa and an internship in Aruba. These experiences gave her the confidence to build a career in the tourism sector.
“What I enjoyed most about my course was working with people from different cultures. Students came from all over the world, so you learned to collaborate not only in classes but also in group projects with people from diverse backgrounds. I learned a lot from this, for example how to balance different working styles. This experience later proved extremely valuable during my fourth-year placement.”
Internship in Aruba
“During my fourth year, I completed an internship in Aruba at Casago, a holiday rental company. I gained extensive practical experience as a coordinator in an international environment. The HRM module from my degree was particularly useful: I was able to apply recruitment and performance appraisal skills straight away and gained my first real experience in managing staff.”
From internship to job
“After my internship, I was offered a position at Casago and continued working as a coordinator. After just six months, I was promoted to Operations Manager, where I worked alongside the HR Manager. This was a completely new responsibility for me, but thanks to the knowledge and skills I had gained during my studies, I was able to carry out this role with confidence.”
Current role
“After about two years, I returned to the Netherlands and now work as an Area Manager at Bookatrekking.com. I am responsible for organising trekking trips in Italy: managing bookings, maintaining contact with guests and local partners, and coordinating operational processes. The skills and experiences I gained during my studies and internships still form the foundation of my work and have strongly influenced my professional development.”
