“Choosing this programme was definitely the right choice for me”
Nina Mai
Creative Business student

Photography, videography and creative projects are Nina’s passion and she was determined to find a degree course that would let her develop this passion. It meant she had to look abroad, beyond her home country of Germany, but as an international environment was also a requirement, this was simply an advantage. She found her place in Leeuwarden at NHL Stenden doing Creative Business.

“I went to an open day at NHL Stenden Leeuwarden to find out more about the university of applied sciences and the Creative Business programme. It felt as if I’d finally found something that really caught my interest and met my requirements. I was also keen to improve my English skills and meet more international people and NHL Stenden felt like the ideal place to do that. I also fell in love with the building itself and the studio and media lab we get to use as Creative Business students.”

Small groups, more feedback

“I especially like the practical, hands-on approach of the programme. For each assignment we work in small teams on projects set by companies. The real-life projects give me the feeling that I’m getting better prepared for working in the media industry and learning how to work with different kinds of people. And I like the fact that we work in small classes so we have close contact with our coaches. There’s a lot of opportunity for feedback on your projects, so you really get to develop your skills. I really love the production modules, working in the studio and media lab, and I’m already sure I want to follow a career in the field of video production or magazine publishing.”

Develop and explore further

“The international emphasis at NHL Stenden helps you develop on a number of fronts. The opportunities to go abroad to do for instance your minor subject or internship mean you not only get to know a different culture and way of living and learning, but also get to explore your field in more depth. I went to Denmark on the Exchange programme for a minor in Multiplatform Storytelling and Production. It gave me the chance to get to know a new country and deepen my knowledge and skills in storytelling and production.”

The right choice

“Choosing this programme was definitely the right choice for me as I’ve developed so much on a personal level. And I’ve had an amazing time so far. There’s a great student community which makes the university and city feel like home very quickly. Leeuwarden is a really cute, lovely city, and because you’re in such close contact with your lecturers and fellow students, the uni has a really personal feel to it. And people are keen to help, so if you’re now thinking about what you want to study and where, then I would say talk to current students. Chatting with students was the most informative for me and it can really help you get personal insights into the programme and clear up any questions you might have.”
