"When I started my Hospitality Management studies, I had never lived away from home. Leeuwarden was close by, which was ideal when I was still quite young. After a few years, I wanted to challenge myself and step out of my comfort zone. So I thought: if I’m going to do an internship, why not go all the way to the other side of the world? That’s how I ended up at the Renaissance Hotel in Aruba, part of the Marriott group."
Learning in an international hotel
"I had already worked in a takeaway and a restaurant, and I knew I enjoyed talking to guests. During my internship, I started with training on Marriott’s systems and standards before joining the leadership team and starting my front office training. My goal is to eventually run the reception desk independently. I had never worked in a hotel before, so I learn something new every day. For my graduation project, I’m also researching why guest satisfaction sometimes drops. I analyse reviews, numbers and guest feedback, using research skills I developed during my studies."
Growing outside my comfort zone
"Living and working in Aruba is about much more than my internship. I live independently, work full time and have to take initiative. The more laid-back way of working took some getting used to. I was used to wanting quick answers and action, but I’ve learned to be more patient and self-reliant. In a short time, I’ve learned a lot about hospitality, but I’ve also developed my independence and leadership skills. And after work? I go to the beach with friends, visit a beach bar or relax at Blue Village, where I live."
