“I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do after school. Events, marketing, social media… I found almost everything interesting, so a broad programme like Hospitality Management seemed like the right choice. For my internship, I decided to take a big step and move from Dokkum to Curaçao. I’m doing my internship at Bed & Bike, a unique mix of a hostel and hotel. I started at the front office, welcoming guests and helping with check-ins and check-outs. Every day I learn something new and gradually take on more responsibility, with the goal of eventually growing into an assistant manager role.”
Learning to deal with the unexpected
“No day is the same. I help guests, rent out cars, work with housekeeping and solve all kinds of problems. Sometimes things happen that you simply can’t prepare for. After a heavy thunderstorm, for example, a guest received a minor electric shock in the pool. Everyone else stayed calm, but I had to arrange help straight away while reassuring the guests. In moments like that, I learn to think and act quickly. Alongside my daily work, I’m also working on my internship assignment, which is now focused on the restaurant at Bed & Bike in Jan Thiel.”
Bringing my passion to work
“Organising events fits perfectly with another big passion of mine: DJing. I’ve been DJing at parties and festivals since I was fourteen, and my hobby even took me to Thailand, where I performed for thousands of people at a full moon party. DJing has taught me how to present myself, network and entertain people, and I use those skills during my internship too. I’ve learnt so much from being abroad and becoming more independent. My advice to anyone who is unsure about doing an internship abroad is simple: just go for it.”
