Sara-Maria Stanciu
Sara-Maria Stanciu has long been interested in conflict resolution and debates so it’s no surprise that those are now her favourite subjects to study. And it meant European Studies was a logical degree for her to take – a programme that enables her to develop her skills as well as study abroad.
“European Studies has turned out to be exactly as I imagined it. I hoped it would be the best choice for expanding my knowledge and skills in a political context. I think I’m a very sociable and adaptable person, which may be why I enjoy conflict resolution so much, but I also like the law and policy classes and how much I’m learning about the political processes in the European Union.”
Creative thinking
“I went to a theoretical high school, so self-study and planning time in to write my portfolios and study for exams is something I’m used to – even though the exams can be quite complex. However, the practical group assignments that simulate political conflicts were more of a challenge for me at first. They really demand a lot more creativity and that’s not something that comes naturally to me.”
Settling in to studying abroad
“It can be a big step to study abroad and I think you have to be ready to deal with sudden changes, whether they’re geographical or cultural. It’s something you need to think about carefully before deciding to move to another country. Luckily, NHL Stenden offers quite a few services to help you settle in and get used to being a student. And the city itself, Leeuwarden, is really nice and has everything you need, from supermarkets to bars, libraries to theatres. And I really like that the programme has a complete mix of nationalities, including about 50% Dutch. I actually think it’s important as it makes it easier to create a bond between the national and international students and helps us, the international students, settle in more quickly to the Netherlands. At least for me, it meant I was encouraged to find out more about local traditions and learn a bit of the language.”
“Studying at NHL Stenden has already opened new doors of experiences and opportunities, giving me the chance to take part in international projects and campaigns. I’ve met incredible people from different countries and formed long-lasting friendships. It’s not only the programme that is pushing me as an individual, but it’s also the environment I’m studying and living in. It’s an environment that continually strives to encourage young people to follow their dreams – whatever they study.”
