Teacher Nursing

From truck driver to postman, hundreds of people signed up in April as extra help for homecare. To get all these new colleagues ready in no time, nursing lecturer Siemen de Roo gives crash courses in basic care.

“Since the start of April I and my fellow nursing teachers at ROC Friese Poort and ROC Friesland College have been organising refresher courses for ‘returners’. All the course participants have worked in healthcare at some point, but for many it’s been a while. Which is why we spend a day updating them with all the necessary knowledge, from hand hygiene, washing people and pulling on stockings to lifting techniques, using healthcare aids and medication safety. Along with the other teachers, I’ve trained some fifty people in just two weeks. They’re all now ready to support colleagues at Noorderbreedte, Kwadrant Groep and Alliade. They won’t go to clients on their own, but they’ll be able to help in a lot of areas. Especially now with the coronavirus demanding so much from our care workers. It’s then wonderful to get help. I think it’s an honour to be able to teach these participants. These are people that have signed up because of their sense of obligation to society. People whose love of the healthcare sector meant that they couldn’t just sit back and watch their colleagues struggle. I’ve also signed up as extra help in the sector. If necessary, I can always switch to helping in practice. Until then I’m putting my heart and soul into training as many colleagues as possible.”
