“I want to be the creative media professional companies turn to.”
Tayshia Weber
AD Creative Media Professional student

After completely her college course in Media Design, Tayshia Weber (20) decided she wasn’t finished with studying yet. She considered going a step further with a communication or multimedia degree but felt four more years of studying was too much. Then she discovered the Creative Media Professional Associate Degree. It was the perfect continuation to her previous course and would give her the chance to get an extra diploma in just 2 years.

“This course is particularly focused on management and business and that appealed to me more than carrying on as a specialist in media design. It doesn’t train you specifically to be a graphic designer or audiovisual designer but gives you a little of everything which means you could end up in a management position or self-employed. It’s the latter that appeals the most to me. I want to be the media professional companies turn to for creativity.”

Kick start for a fitness influencer.

“Our learning approach is through Design-Based Education and that was new for me. It means you work on real questions set by companies using a structured design process. First you find out all about the assignment and carry out research, then you make a prototype that you test and adapt where necessary, and then you finish with delivering a final product. I learnt a lot from the process. If I start a project without any preconceptions then I immediately start coming up with ideas, but the research you do first is also very important.”

“In the audiovisual part of the Production module I opted to make a video for a client. It was fitness influencer Kaylee Dijkstra and she wanted a video for her platform Fitenflex to kickstart her career as influencer. That's what I like so much about our assignments: I help her by making a video she can use, and she helps me by giving me experience.”

A professional in two years

“If you want to go on to do a bachelor's degree, you can easily switch from an associate degree. I stayed with the AD because I was so impressed by the high-quality products being made. And many of my fellow students have already developed expertise because they've already done a course in a similar field or because of their job.”

“If you stay on the AD, then you also get a semester in Entrepreneurship before doing an internship. Everything moves so fast when it's propped into two years, but it's doable. The programme is structured and the semesters logically organised. In each module, you work on projects in what we call ateliers, and you get workshops and lectures on the theory you need for those projects. There aren't any exams, but you get graded on your final products and sometimes you have to present and defend them. It means you're more active than when you learn from books - it's a lot more practical than I'd expected from higher vocational education!”
