A fascination for something is often a great trigger for choosing a study. Vinh Nguyen chose Logistics Management because he wanted to understand how e-commerce deliveries could be so fast back home in Vietnam. And he wanted to study abroad. The choice fell on NHL Stenden and the quiet city of Emmen.

Choosing a different path

ā€œI knew I wanted to study abroad, but what and where? I compared different countries, different studies and looked at practical things like costs and whether I needed to speak the local language. Finland appealed to me, but living and working in the Netherlands seemed easier as you don't immediately need to speak Dutch.

At first, I mostly applied for finance programmes because that matched my family background. But I actually wanted to do something different. Logistics Management in Emmen wasn't my first choice, but the more I studied logistics, the more I realised I really enjoyed it – and I quickly learned how the systems behind those fast e-commerce deliveries worked. "

Turning data into decisions

"I've always liked working with numbers, but I don't just want to look at data. I want to use it to solve real problems. During the programme, we work with companies on assignments using their actual data. I can see how my data analysis helps lead to a decision or conclusion. And companies can use your advice. The distance between what you learn at school and the knowledge you need in a company can be wide, but NHL Stenden gives you that insight. You learn how theory gets applied in a company situation.

In the future, I'd like to work in production planning, preferably in the food and beverage industry. My plan is to first gain work experience in the Netherlands before eventually taking that knowledge back to Vietnam."

Finding support in Emmen

"Moving abroad isn't always easy.  I've definitely sometimes felt homesick. But living in Emmen has helped me settle in quickly. It's a smaller city and our community at NHL Stenden feels supportive and personal. Studying abroad has also changed me. I used to prefer working on my own, but now I enjoy working with others. I've become more open-minded, more confident and more willing to try new things.ā€
