If you are following an AD, bachelor's or master's programme and have a residence permit for study purposes, you must meet several requirements. These include being enrolled at a Dutch university or university of applied sciences, actively studying and obtaining sufficient credits for the IND study progress standard.
You have to obtain at least 50% of the required credits for each academic year.
For example: if you start (or continue) your studies in September 2023, you have to obtain at least 50% of the study credits for that academic year, i.e. before 1 September 2024. This means you need to obtain at least 30 ECTS. If you start your studies in February 2024, you have to obtain at least 50% of the study credits for this semester before 1 September 2024. This means you need to obtain at least 15 ECTS.
Yes, you have to meet this requirement each year.
If you expect that you may have difficulties, or you have strong doubts that you'll be able to get sufficient study credit requirement (for instance personal circumstances that may lead to a delay in your studies), we strongly advise you to get in contact with a student counselor. Please mention the MoMI subject if you contact Student Info for planning the appointment.

If your study programme is set up in such a way that you cannot obtain the required credits, for instance because credits are only awarded at the end of a semester, then please contact your programme. The programme will then decide if you can be exempted from the requirement.
You need to have permission from your study programme to complete your studies abroad. You will then need to tell CSA that you are leaving the Netherlands. CSA will then withdraw your residence permit for study so that you no longer need to meet the requirements for keeping your residence permit.
You still have to obtain at least 50% of the required credits for the period you are enrolled this academic year. The obtained credits from both programmes may be added together.
For example: if you started (or continued) your studies in September 2023 en switched to another study programme in February 2024, you have to obtain at least 50% of the study credits for that academic year, i.e. before 1 September 2024. This means you need to obtain at least 30 ECTS.
Deadline and consequences
If you have not been exempted from the requirement by a student counsellor or your study programme, then your Dutch residence permit will be withdrawn and you will be deregistered from the IND as of 1 September. This means you will not be able to continue studying in the Netherlands and you will have to leave the country.
The date your residence permit expires is the date your permit is deregistered by NHL Stenden. It is no longer the date given on your residence permit. You will receive a letter of confirmation from the IND confirming the date of deregistration.
You generally have 4 weeks (28 days) from the date the permit is withdrawn to leave the Netherlands. You will be informed of this by the IND in the letter they send you confirming your deregistration.
