How do you develop a destination that people want to visit? During their first year of Tourism Management, students explore this question not only through theory, but, more importantly, through practical experience. On a study trip to Slovenia, they gained first-hand insight into how sustainable tourism and destination marketing come together in the industry.

Organising the trip

A group of six students helped organise the study trip. They were responsible for planning, communication and coordinating with external partners. This provided them with an initial insight into what is involved in managing an international project.

Experiencing destinations first-hand

Once in Slovenia, the students visited destinations including Ljubljana, Piran, Koper, Portorož and Lake Bled. Through discussions with local tourism organisations, they learned how destinations attract visitors and, just as importantly, encourage them to return. Topics such as marketing, sustainability and collaboration between municipalities, businesses and other stakeholders were central to these discussions.

Learning beyond the classroom

The study trip demonstrates how Tourism Management prepares students for the professional world. By combining academic theory with practical experience, students develop valuable knowledge, skills and an international perspective on tourism.
