Kestral grew up in the United States and earned her Bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering from Northeastern University. During her studies, she conducted research on topics such as biological phosphorus recovery and nitrogen removal using nature-based solutions, including wetland systems. In 2020, she started her PhD research at Wetsus and Wageningen University & Research within the Environmental Technology Group, focusing on biological desulfurization processes that convert toxic hydrogen sulfide gas into reusable elemental sulfur. In the autumn of 2024, she joined NHL Stenden.
What fascinates her most about her field is the remarkable potential of biological systems and the ability of microorganisms to adapt to a wide range of environmental conditions. She sees wastewater not as a waste product, but as a valuable source of water, energy, and resources. Working with students and inspiring them to explore biotechnology and sustainable water solutions is an important part of her work. Her ambition is to help shape the next generation of water professionals and contribute to a more circular and sustainable water cycle, where resources are recovered and environmental impact is minimized.
