Both the largest town in Friesland province and its capital city, Leeuwarden drives the provincial economy. With a population of around 100,000, it is located in the north-western part of the Netherlands, about a 90-minute drive from Amsterdam and just 30 minutes from the North Sea coast. Friesland, which has its own distinct culture and language, is one of the more sparsely populated provinces in the Netherlands, and it is home to many nature reserves, lakes and recreational areas, as well as to three major institutions of higher education. The city of Leeuwarden has a beautiful historic city centre, ample choice in shopping and dining establishments, entertainment venues, and so on. The city also offers excellent access (both by car and public transport) to the rest of the country.
NHL Stenden’s main campus is located in Leeuwarden; the student body of all NHL Stenden branches combined is currently 8,750. The selection of courses on offer includes International Hospitality Management, Tourism Management and Media and Entertainment Management. The campus provides access to modern facilities such as computer labs, Wi-Fi, a library, a gym, a bank, a cafeteria and an employment agency. Our very own Stenden Hotel, run by students from the School of Hotel Management, is also located in Leeuwarden.
Leeuwarden is a bustling college town with a student population of more than 20,000 and year-round events organised especially for students (including various festivals and comedy events). For more information about Leeuwarden as a student city and for a list of all events, please check out: Leeuwarden studiestad
Besides the numerous museums and landmark buildings that are a testament to Leeuwarden’s rich history, the city also has a lively bar and pub scene for students, with low, student-friendly prices.
If you’re interested in exercise and keeping fit, there is a gym right on campus, along with a variety of sports clubs and facilities. The annual Sports Pass, available for €70, provides access to all courses in the gym. For €20 per month, you get access to all courses and gym facilities.
Leeuwarden has been selected as Europe’s Capital of Culture 2018. This means that a wealth of cultural activities will be organised to celebrate this milestone. As Community and Diversity is one of the themes of the cultural programme, NHL Stenden students will, of course, be able to get involved in all kinds of projects and activities.

Coming by car? There is a big parking lot right next to NHL Stenden with enough spaces. A ticket for the whole day is around 2 euro and on Open Days and other events parking is free.
From the train station, which is in the centre of town, you can take a bus with number 12 on the front. It will take you right in front of our building in less than ten minutes. The bus goes very regularly as a lot of students travel from the station to NHL Stenden. You could walk as well, that will take you about 20-30 minutes.
