Both the largest town in Friesland province and its capital city, Leeuwarden drives the provincial economy. With a population of around 100,000, it is located in the north-western part of the Netherlands, about a 90-minute drive from Amsterdam and just 30 minutes from the North Sea coast. Friesland, which has its own distinct culture and language, is one of the more sparsely populated provinces in the Netherlands, and it is home to many nature reserves, lakes and recreational areas, as well as to three major institutions of higher education. The city of Leeuwarden has a beautiful historic city centre, ample choice in shopping and dining establishments, entertainment venues, and so on. The city also offers excellent access (both by car and public transport) to the rest of the country.
