Student city of Leeuwarden

Leeuwarden. The capital of the Dutch province of Friesland and the largest city in the province with an entrepreneurial spirit that drives the provincial economy. Leeuwarden is in the north of the Netherlands, about a 90-minute drive from Amsterdam and just 30 minutes from the mud flats of the North Sea coast. Friesland has its own distinct culture and language and is one of the more rural provinces in the Netherlands, with its cities, towns and villages connected and separated by nature reserves, lakes and recreational areas. According to Booking.com’s traveller review awards for 2024, Friesland is one of the most welcoming destinations in the world.

The facts about Leeuwarden

  • Leeuwarden is the capital of the province of Friesland in the north of the Netherlands

  • There are over 128,000 inhabitants – and over 20,000 of them are students

  • It takes just 25 minutes to walk from the main train station to the NHL Stenden campus – and it only takes 10 minutes by bike or bus

  • Leeuwarden has over 13 museums and galleries, from natural history to ceramics to modern art

  • In really cold winters, when the ice on the rivers, lakes and canals is thick enough, there’s a 200km ice-skating event that goes through each of the 11 cities of Friesland, starting and finishing in Leeuwarden. But you can just skate for fun on the indoor ice-rink too, if you like.

The social scene

Home to three institutes of higher education, Leeuwarden is a bustling student city. With a student population of more than 20,000 and year-round events organised especially for students, there’s always something to do and people to meet.

There’s so much choice when it comes to filling your free time, you might wonder how you’re going to fit it all in. Whether you fancy natural history or modern art, an escape room or a paintball session, a film or a concert, local theatre or international performers, a silent book club or a speakeasy bar, there really is a lot going on in Leeuwarden.

  • Get a basic sports pass and join a few sports classes and get discounts at local clubs for €10 a month

  • Go for maximum fitness and work out in the gym, play different sports and maybe even join a local team for between €25 and €30 a month

Shopping & doing groceries

Do you enjoy exploring the latest fashion trends in large stores and cool pop-up shops, or are you more into discovering hidden gems and quirky gadgets in charming boutiques? In the historic heart of Leeuwarden, you can experience it all.

Let’s be honest, a student budget doesn’t often stretch to a take-away every evening. And standing on your own two feet means being able to sort your own breakfasts, lunches and dinners  – and maybe for your friends too. So think up those menus, make your shopping list and get yourself off to the supermarket, specialist store or weekly market. And have fun!

Housing

Once you’ve sent in your application, you can start looking for accommodation. In the Netherlands, you need to arrange student housing yourself. Our housing partner in Leeuwarden can actually guarantee accommodation for our first-year international students under certain conditions. And in Emmen and Meppel, there's enough choice for everyone.

In the north of the Netherlands, accommodation is easier to find and far more affordable than in other parts of the country. In fact, studies show you get more space for your money in the north.
