Mindful Leadership – Virtual is an innovative online minor by NHL Stenden and Universitas Triatma Mulya. Designed for students unable to attend the on-site Bali program, this pilot integrates Virtual Reality (VR) and collaborative digital classrooms to deliver immersive personal development. The curriculum explores mindfulness meditation, emotional intelligence, and mindful leadership within virtual spaces inspired by Bali’s traditions. Students cultivate self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management essential for developing leadership skills for modern professional environments. Combining digital modules with select offline campus activities in Leeuwarden, the minor provides a flexible, accessible pathway for personal and leadership growth.
Minor content
Mindful leadership adopts a holistic approach, addressing both intrapersonal (self-leadership) and interpersonal (team and organizational) dimensions through emotional intelligence. Students examine core frameworks such as self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management. Rather than focusing solely on theory, the curriculum uses reflective inquiry, masterclasses, and experiential exercises to translate mindfulness concepts into practical workplace skills.
The minor is interdisciplinary, bringing together students from diverse backgrounds to explore how mindful leadership adds value to organizations. Key topics include mindfulness at work, leadership styles, compassionate communication, and team management. By exploring these concepts in virtual and VR-enhanced environments, students learn to build psychological safety, resolve conflicts, and foster sustainable organizational well-being.
This minor is offered by the study program Human Resource Management.
Structure of the minor
Unit 1: Mindfulness (5 EC): Focuses on applied benefits of mindfulness in organizations. Students engage in masterclasses on meditation, yoga philosophy, and self-regulation. Working in groups, they complete a literature review and case study on corporate mindfulness programs (Industry Report) while starting a personal reflection portfolio.
Unit 2: Emotional Intelligence (5 EC): Explores self-awareness, motivation, and resilience using frameworks like the Enneagram and Self-Determination Theory. Students design and facilitate a 45-minute interactive workshop for their peers (Student-Led Seminar) to teach emotional regulation tools.
Unit 3: Mindful Leadership (5 EC): Centers on mindful communication, conflict resolution, and cross-cultural leadership. Students synthesize their growth into a personal Action Plan (Personal Business Model) detailing how their leadership competencies will add value to future roles.
