Jan van Iersel will be resigning as a member of our Board of Executives as of September 1, 2019, having accepted a position as Chairman of the Executive Board of Van Hall Larenstein University of Applied Sciences.

Jan joined the Board of Executives as a member in March 2014, and since January 1, 2018 he has been a member of the Board of Executives of NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences. Jan is known as a passionate educator who greatly values personal interaction with students and staff.
He is fiercely dedicated to improving educational quality and student satisfaction and was one of the driving forces behind our Design Based Education (DBE) educational concept.

Jan: “Working for NHL and later NHL Stenden over the past few years has been a wonderful experience for me. I have always been driven to exploit the full potential of our universities of applied sciences, so as to provide high-quality education and make a fundamental contribution to students and our educational community. Of course, I didn’t do it all by myself – it was a team effort all the way, and I would like to thank all my colleagues who have worked with me in recent years in our shared commitment to offering our students the best possible educational experience. Since higher vocational education has always been close to my heart, I am delighted to become the Chairman of the Board of Executives of the ‘greenest’ university of applied sciences in the Netherlands. It will provide me with the unique opportunity to develop further and remain true to my educational principles.”

Erica Schaper: “Jan played a key role in preparing the merger between our institutions, and as a member of the NHL Stenden Board of Executives he made a very valuable contribution to the further growth and development of our new university of applied sciences. We are very grateful to him for this contribution and will miss his commitment and dedication. As someone who lives and breathes education, Jan maintains close ties to students and lecturers. He has a knack for linking policy and educational practice in the most natural way, with recent examples including the educational policy and quality targets he developed together with lecturers and students.

As the Chairman of the Board of Executives, I am proud that Jan will be joining the Executive Board of Van Hall Larenstein. Klaas-Wybo and I wish him every success in this new stage of his career and look forward to continuing our collaboration in promoting and raising the profile of Friesland province.”

Supervisory Board Chairman Cees Bijl: “Jan van Iersel is a born educator, driven by the desire to create a culture of permanent improvement of the quality of education and innovation of the educational resources available. Jan likes to engage in direct discussion on these topics with students and staff. He is an administrator who is very much involved in the educational process. The Supervisory Board is deeply grateful to Jan for fostering a culture of quality at our university of applied sciences.”
