Network of European universities with a regional focus

Since the end of 2019, NHL Stenden has been a partner in the Regional University Network - European University (RUN-EU), this network of seven European higher education institutions. A network of European universities, focusing on the region, is being built jointly. RUN-EU promotes and develops student-oriented, challenging and practice-oriented flexible educational activities that benefit the region. The joint and interregional approach to higher education and research activities allows for innovative work on issues that affect our regions, such as quality of life.

European partners on delegation to Leeuwarden
From 21 to 24 March, delegations from the six European higher education partners within RUN-EU will visit NHL Stenden. During this visit they will discuss the progress of RUN-EU and RUN-EU PLUS and get to know the educational concept of Design Based Education and practice-based research at NHL Stenden. They will also visit the Inclusive Community Lab Fryslân, Innovation Pact Fryslân and Wetsus. These regional partners have been involved in RUN-EU since the beginning and are closely linked to the focus areas of the network. The visit is also part of an 'Exploratory Mission' in the field of joint programmes and activities related to Tourism & Hospitality.

Why this partnership?
RUN-EU's theme, the region, is unique in Europe. The network enables students, companies and (government) institutions to successfully deal with the challenges of the future in the respective regions of these European educational partners. In this way, the aim is to contribute to the sustainable social, economic and cultural development of the regions.  The focus is on innovation and actively working on the development of future-proof skills and abilities.

According to Dymphi van der Hoeven, RUN-EU project leader within NHL Stenden, "RUN-EU will create many new opportunities for students, teachers, researchers and the professional field in the region. In time, all students from our various programmes will have the opportunity to participate on a large scale in short, internationally oriented projects, the so-called Short Advanced Programs (SAPs). The first SAPs have already taken place and were very successful. In time, we will be able to offer joint and double degrees. We are working on innovative virtual and physical international mobility for students, staff and researchers alike and thus draw knowledge to the region."

Agnes Brinks, project leader RUN-EU PLUS adds: "With RUN-EU PLUS we focus on promoting the development of research and innovation together with and for society. Among other things, by developing and implementing research programmes based on professional practice in cooperation within the RUN-EU alliance. But also by supporting researchers with training offers in the field of open science and a Research Career Development Programme."

Students
Within RUN-EU, 15 students from each partner university are involved through a RUN-EU student advisory board. A number of students from NHL Stenden have already participated in various intensive short programmes and projects in which they have worked together with students from various courses of the European partner institutions on solutions to regional problems.  Ramon Jongschaap, International Business student says, 'I was able to learn a lot about the participating countries and cultures within RUN-EU and found the interdisciplinary element very valuable. I found the SAP in which I participated very interesting by working with totally different cultures and backgrounds on a project. This was an enrichment. It is a good learning experience for students to learn about other subjects outside of their own study programme and to approach themes from different perspectives.’
