NHL Stenden students and staff attend RUN-EU’s biggest annual event in Finland, to discuss the future of the European University

From 7 – 11 november 2022, more than 120 students (including 28 students from NHL Stenden) visited the Häme University of Applied Sciences (HAMK) in Finland, as well as rectors and presidents, lecturers, researchers and associated partners of RUN-EU.

RUN European University (RUN-EU), which started its operations in 2020, holds its General Assembly (GA) once a year to focus on the achievements of the past year and to plan the future. At the same time, the Students Week also takes place, bringing together student representatives of all RUN-EU partner institutions. This year, a delegation of NHL Stenden students and staff members travelled to Hämeenlinna in Finland for the GA.

Students at the center of the European University

For students, RUN-European University organises, among other things, Short Advanced Programmes (SAPs), which typically have a hybrid format, consisting of online studies combined with a week-long mobility period to one of the European University’s member institutions. With these opportunities, an international experience becomes more accessible, also for students with children or those studying alongside work, who can therefore not participate in longer exchange studies. Additionally, the grants available for selected students ensure that a SAP experience is possible for all students, irrespective of their financial status.

During the Students Week in Finland, students participated in Short Advanced Programmes in which they delved deeper into the financial, personal, ecological and social perspectives of well-being.

"I highly recommend the programme, the SAP opens one's mind to the possibility of a brighter tomorrow through means of innovation, creativity, and togetherness with students from different cultural backgrounds, life, and experiences. The idea of the SAP is to use the perspective of all participating students and merge them into the creation of a new product or resulting into a better way of looking at the world, in doing so helping higher education evolve and stay relevant as well as ahead of time,” says Jean Oliviera, a Master student of International Leisure and Tourism, who participated in the financial perspectives of well-being track.

Technology and Innovation student Bonne Sijbesma follows, “Partaking in a SAP will not only result in personal development and experience, but also in amazing memories and new connections with people worldwide. If I may speak for myself here, I'm sure I will keep these memories forever with me!”

It is clear that - after the pandemic - young people really need a break from their day-to-day routines at home, which is exactly what the annual Student Week at RUN-EU’s General Assembly in Finland offered them last week.

Expansion of the European University alliance

In Hämeenlinna, RUN-European University representatives reviewed the alliance’s achievements so far. However, eyes are already set on the future, as RUN-EU expands from 7 to 9 partners and prepares to apply for new, longer-term funding.
