Afke van der Woud has her roots in Friesland, but has always been very internationally oriented. She grew up in a village where social values were considered a great asset. After living in Brazil for a while, she became interested in the unfairness of the world. Hence, her undergraduate and graduate studies focused on the well-being of individuals in different types of communities (cultures).

After obtaining her master's in 1997, she worked as a teacher at the Leisure Management program of Christelijke Hogeschool Nederland (now NHLStenden). In 1999, she moved to the United States, where she began her Ph.D. in Parks, Recreation and Tourism Resources at Michigan State University in 2001 on a research assistantship. During her time in the United States, she worked on many research projects in the area of community recreation. Her research interests have always been strongly tied to community development in various contexts. For her PhD research, she investigated the relationship between leisure participation and civic participation.

Currently Afke is working at NHL Stenden Hogeschool as head researcher of the academy Communication & Creative Business. Also, she is a team member of the professorship Organisations and Social Media. At the professorship, she is a regular contributor to the writing of important documents, including the extension proposal. She has also played a major role in the Indycaster project. She has been responsible for developing a research program in the bachelor's curriculum of the Creative Business program. Currently, she is in charge of setting up a hybrid research program in line with the DBE education philosophy of the university. Afke enjoys working with small groups of students on research projects that provide ideas and relevant results for the "real world".
