Inauguratie Callum Philbin

Callum Philbin has been appointed as professor of applied sciences of International Teacher Education (ITE) at NHL Stenden. This appointment and inauguration is an important step in strengthening the international profile and practice-based research within international education. Callum leads the ITE Impact Team, which has been operating at the ITE Campus in The Netherlands since 2024.

The International Teacher Education professorship of applied sciences contributes to international educational institutions at home and abroad. Based at NHL Stenden's ITE Campus in Meppel, home to the only international teacher training courses for primary and secondary education, it contributes to international education at home and abroad.

Inclusion, equality and global connectedness

Callum opened his inauguration with a statement: "It's the end of the world, so let's build a new one. Education is at the point where we have to decide whether we love the world enough to take responsibility."

Callum: "We need new ambitious ideas in the field of education. We need to adjust education accordingly and get used to feeling uncomfortable. The innovation we need is inevitable. Every day, students and teachers in international schools work together to build a future of inclusion, equality and global connectedness."

The importance of international education

Especially for his inauguration, Mary Hayden - Professor of International Education and Head of Department - from the University of Bath had come to Leeuwarden. She stressed the importance of international education. "The international school sector is changing rapidly with the rise in multinational companies and globalisation. There are now more than 14,000 international schools worldwide. International Teacher Education courses are a “stepping stone” to the rest of the world."

Callum's appointment marks the start of a new chapter for the professorship and ITE programmes. "A milestone for us as educator," says Kristien Koning, head of ITE. "We look forward to continuing to build innovative and impactful teaching and research with Callum and the team."
