NHL Stenden and RUN-EU launch FILS HUB: inspiring the next generation through innovation and STEM
On 26 and 27 May, the Regional University Network-European University (RUN-EU) alliance gathered at Howest University of Applied Sciences in Bruges to celebrate an exciting milestone in their ongoing collaboration: the official launch of the FILS HUB, a dynamic network for learning and innovation.
The FILS HUB is a cross-institutional network of centres located within each RUN-EU partner university. These centres offer custom-designed programmes aimed at making STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects more accessible and engaging for pre-university students. The core objective is to nurture future-ready skills in young people across RUN-EU regions, reflecting the alliance’s broader mission and vision.
This initiative also aligns with the European Union’s ‘Pact for Skills, a cornerstone of the European Skills Agenda launched in 2025. The FILS HUB plays a vital role in preparing the next generation to tackle the dual challenges of the green transition and digital transformation.
A creative space for young minds
Across its various centres, the FILS HUB offers engaging and hands-on experiences for children and youth aged 6 to 17, along with their teachers. Through workshops, creative challenges, and interactive activities, these programmes foster key skills, promote social innovation, and ignite curiosity about building a sustainable, tech-savvy future.
Locally rooted, internationally connected
Each FILS HUB centre is deeply embedded in its university’s local ecosystem and often works in close partnership with schools or science outreach organisations. Examples of these centres include:
- Challenge Lab - NHL Stenden
- La Estación de la Ciencia y la Tecnologias - Universidad de Burgos (UBU)
- Taste – Food and Tourism Education - Technological University of the Shannon (TUS)
- Centro de Ciência Viva do Alviela - Casoscópio - IPLeiria
- Future Innovation Lab - IPCA
- Design Factory - HAMK
- Netzwerk MINKT & Inatura - FHV
- Mind and Makerspace - Howest
Through these connected spaces, RUN-EU continues to strengthen its commitment to using education as a catalyst for change - empowering young learners, supporting educators, and building resilient communities through knowledge sharing and international cooperation.
