Kor Spoelstra

Kor Spoelstra focuses on how lifestyle interventions can support the prevention, treatment and recovery of addiction. His research explores the complex interaction between lifestyle and addiction, and how this affects the development, course and recovery from illness, as well as daily functioning. He takes an integrated and cross-domain approach to this.

Associate Professor Addiction & Lifestyle

Research areas:

  • Addiction (substance use, smoking, alcohol/drugs)
  • Lifestyle interventions
  • Behavioral change

His work touches on topics such as prevention, lifestyle coaching and education, appropriate care, challenging behaviour, support for loved ones, alcohol and alcohol-free drinks, smoking, cannabis, morbid obesity, psychedelics and meaning-making. He looks at both the development and implementation of lifestyle interventions in addiction care, and how prevention and appropriate care can be better integrated. He also studies behaviour that is difficult to understand and respond to.

Kor’s research connects directly to regional and national policy frameworks such as the Frisian Integrated Care Agreement (FRIZA), GALA, and the integrated national prevention strategy. He studied medicine at the University of Groningen, trained as a psychiatrist and obtained his PhD through an MD/PhD track. He also serves as acting psychiatry trainer and medical director at Verslavingszorg Noord Nederland (VNN).

His work supports a more health-focused, integrated approach to addiction care, strengthens self-direction among clients, and helps improve quality of life for vulnerable groups. He works closely with VNN, NISPA, Hanze University of Applied Sciences, healthcare professionals, municipalities, partner organisations and policymakers involved in regional prevention, innovation and healthcare programmes.
