In Groningen, there are currently numerous local, small-scale initiatives working on alternative solutions to the current food system. Together with the food initiatives Tuin in de Stad and de Blije Bodem, the idea has arisen to connect these food initiatives (food producers, consumers, dining establishments, and local shops) in and around the city of Groningen under a joint umbrella brand with the working title: ‘Ons Eten’ (Our Food).

Motivation

The goal of this initiative is twofold. On one hand, it focuses on scaling up existing food initiatives through collaboration and a clear positioning of the entire network. On the other hand, the initiative aims to create a healthy relationship between citizens and food, offering an accessible and reliable alternative to conventional supermarkets.

Accessibility includes both the availability and affordability of the products, with inclusivity playing a crucial role. This means that the products should not only be physically accessible to everyone, regardless of location, but also financially feasible, so people with different income levels have access.

Project approach

This research project is focused on determining the support for the 'Ons Eten' concept. It explores the perception of the potential, effectiveness, and possible engagement with the plan as described above. This, through a series of semi-structured interviews with seven food producers, four locations that could function as food hubs, and several existing platforms where sustainable initiatives are already being showcased.

Project partners:

This project, commissioned by the Municipality of Groningen, was designed as an exploration by the Transformational Media research group in collaboration with Tuin in de Stad.
