Humans and machines act complementarily. The machine operates as instructed, and its outcome is meaningful to humans. This is the ideal scenario. However, in our daily work, it is effortless to find examples of less-than-ideal human-machine interaction, resulting in frustration, errors, and sometimes even damage. Typically, blame is placed on the human worker, or, at best, productivity is reduced.

By engaging in the Human Factors Engineering (HFE) module, you will learn to:

  • Analyze complex work situations and design solutions grounded in science.

  • This module covers topics such as the human sensory system, human cognition, human decision-making, anthropomorphism, safety and accident prevention, automation, and organizational aspects.

What can you expect?

The module's foundation is provided by the book "Designing for People" by Wickens et al. Through nine assignments that involve the analysis of relevant maritime cases, you not only delve into the core issues but also hone your skills in structured academic writing. Each assignment is provided with feedback, marking, and suggestions for improvement and consideration. Completing these assignments fulfills the requirements of the HFE module.
