Practical Research and Statistics

Starts in
August
Location
Studiedagen
TBD

This module covers the basic concepts, methods, and execution of research and statistics. As a conclusion to the module, the student conducts a mini-research project on a self-chosen maritime related topic and presents this in a research report and a short presentation.

The module is divided in three periods of four weeks each, with a separate contact week at the start, halfway and the end of the module. In addition every 3 weeks a short contact moment is planned, either online or on site for additional instruction and feedback. The first two periods are used for theory on statistics. All periods are used to introduce students in the concepts of research by gradually developing their own research projects. Research topics covered are literature review, selecting the correct research methodology, data collection and analyses including verification on statistical validity of the results en drafting a research report. At the end the present makes a short presentation of his/her research project.

Statistics is part of the Practical Research & Statistics Module. This will help you setting up an experiment and analyze results in order to reach an objective outcome of your experiment.

In four assignments you get hands on experience with analyzing data using the software package SPSS and interpreting the results of the relevant statistical test. All assignments consist of a set of data and research question(s) that needs to be worked out by you and reported in an accepted academic style. Blackboard will be the medium for that. During the PRS module you will have two or three contact moments (in Class) during the contact weeks; In between these weeks there will be two on-line contact moments by means of Blackboard Collaborate. The module requires you to have a functioning SPSS software package; this is offered with (huge!) student discount by SurfSpot , it is also very helpfull to have a paper copy on the use of SPSS at the background of your desk.
