Electrical and Electronic Engineering course summary
During the Electrical and Electronic Engineering programme, you develop the technical and problem-solving skills you need to design, develop and improve electronic systems. You learn to combine electronics, software and engineering knowledge and apply them to real-world challenges. You also develop skills in teamwork, communication, creativity and innovation.
Gain a strong foundation in electrical engineering and develop an in-depth understanding of programming and hardware. Work on projects and apply what you have learned.
Semester 1 - Direct Currents
Explore electrical and system engineering and the field of Embedded Systems (ES). You do so while making a three-wheel vehicle in period 1 and a controller for a washing machine in period 2, You will also visit companies in the region.
Semester 2 - Alternating Currents
Explore the field of Industrial Automation (IA) and electronics by applying key concepts of IA in a practical project. You’ll also develop your knowledge of electronics and your lab skills. A short internship will help you learn new skills and get to know Dutch company culture.
Subjects:
- Applied Mathematics
- Network Analysis
- Electronics
- Lab Skills
- Programming In C
- Embedded systems
- Digital Hardware
- Software
- Dutch
- Professional skills
- Study Career Coaching
Theory 30%, Application 70% | 60 ECTS per year
Build on the first-year foundation and specialise in electronic hardware, embedded systems or industrial automation during projects.
Semester 3 - Expanding the Horizon
Explore the field of Electronics (EL) by designing your measurement amplifier. This semester you will also start the specialisation of your choice (ES, EL or IA).
Semester 4 - Robotics
Continue your specialisation and finalize with an 8-week project in which you will build your own working robot in collaboration with students from Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science.
Subjects:
- Systems and Control
- Digital Computer Networks
- Electro Physics
- Electronics
- Robotics
- PLC Programming
- Dutch
- Professional Skills
Theory 30%, Application 70% | 60 ECTS per year
During one semester you gain experience in a professional setting with a five-month internship in a company of your choice. During the other semester you specialize with a minor of your choice.
Semester 5 - Minor
You can choose any minor that allows you to deepen or broaden your knowledge. Examples:
- Academic Orientation
- Entrepreneurship
- I’AM AI
- High Tech Systems and Materials
- Biomedical Engineering
- Power Electronics
- Smart Industry
During your minor you focus on a specific subject or expand your knowledge by taking an additional subject. This allows you to truly take charge of your education by ‘customising’ your course.
You can take these minors on the NHL Stenden campus in the Netherlands or at one of the NHL Stenden Grand Tour locations in South Africa, Bali or Thailand. You can also choose from minors offered by other courses and universities of applied sciences via an Exchange programme – this is all part of broadening your academic skills.
Read more about the options available and where you can take your minors in the section below on minors and specialisations.
Semester 6 - Internship
Your internship assignment depends on the company where you do your internship. Sometimes you will contribute to ongoing projects, while at other times you will be given your own project and be required to solve a technical problem. You may also have the opportunity to do your internship abroad.
60 ECTS per year
Follow a specialisation in Electronics, Embedded Systems or Industrial Automation for a semester. You finish your studies with a graduation internship in which you address an unsolved problem for a company of your choice. Internships often lead to a job offer from the company.
Semester 7 - Specialisation Programme
You can further specialise in the field of your choice:
- -Embedded Systems
- -Industrial Automation
- -Electronics
Semester 8 - Graduation Internship
You conclude your studies with a graduation internship, addressing an unsolved problem for a company. The experience will showcase your professional skills, including teamwork, communication, problem-solving and the ability to work independently.
60 ECTS per year

Practical approach of Electrical and Electronic Engineering
We aim to help you put theory into practice as quickly as possible. Through our educational concept, Design-Based Education (DBE), you work in small teams of students, teachers, researchers and industry professionals. You tackle current, real-life issues developing and adapting your visions and ideas to form a solid solution.
International opportunities
We want to prepare you for an international, intercultural, and ever-changing environment, so that you can dive into the unknown and gain experience in an international context. It is possible with our Grand Tour, Exchange programme or one of our mobility options offered by RUN-EU. Or you can choose to do your internship abroad. You’ll be able to put together the right combination of courses and internships to develop both your professional and personal skills – and develop your own network for the future.
