English Language Course

Overseas students are a valuable part of our growing international identity. Thanks to its global footprint, NHL Stenden attracts students from all over the world. The English Language Course helps these students to reach the required level of English (IELTS 6 for undergraduate programmes) and helps them to settle quickly into a new culture and study style. 

The English Language Course is taught by teachers from different cultures who are native or near-native speakers; they are qualified and experienced in second language teaching. You will benefit from their expertise and their understanding of the complexities of learning a second language at a high level, as well as using the latest technology. NHL Stenden is also the official Cambridge examination centre for the northern part of the Netherlands.

The English Language Course enables you to:

  • improve your English language skills;
  • learn about problem-solving methods used extensively at NHL Stenden: Problem Based Learning and Design Based Education;
  • prepare yourself for study NHL Stenden and life in Europe.

The course


  • IELTS skills: Writing, Reading, Listening, Speaking, IELTS exam technique.
  • Other English skills: Pronunciation, Grammar, Vocabulary, Business English.
  • 18 hours per week.

Problem Based Learning

  • Gain a basic understanding of this problem-solving method.
  • Learn general study skills valuable for studying at NHL Stenden.
  • Learn about Dutch culture and cultural differences.
  • 2 hours per week.

Admission requirements

To follow the English Language Course, you will need:

  • a high school graduation diploma from an accredited institution;
  • an IELTS score of at least 5.0 or TOEFL scores of 500 (paper-based),173 (computer-based) or 60 (internet-based) or a Cambridge ESOL score FCE-C
