Migration is everywhere in today’s world: in the news, in political debates, and in the lives of millions of people. But what drives migration, what dilemmas arise from it, and how can societies respond? If you are curious about the big picture—how global trends, ethical debates, and local realities come together—Block 1 of this minor offers the perfect entry point.

Minor content

In this block, you will study migration in a broad, comparative way. A knowledge programme introduces you to the foundations of migration studies, drawing on key literature and case studies. At the same time, you will work in a group on a real-life research project for a client, where you investigate a current migration-related issue and propose actionable solutions. Skills courses in cross-cultural negotiation and multidisciplinary project management help you develop the tools needed to work effectively across borders and professional fields. Short workshops further support your academic and professional growth. A C1 level of English is recommended.

Structure of the minor

Block 1 addresses themes such as global drivers of migration, socio-economic and security challenges, ethical dilemmas, and the role of media and public opinion. You will practice how to negotiate across cultural differences, how to structure and manage projects, and how to collaborate in a multidisciplinary environment.

The block combines knowledge acquisition, applied research, and professional skills. Students are assessed through a variety of methods, including knowledge tests, oral assessment and portfolio evaluation. This ensures that your academic knowledge, teamwork and communication skills are all taken into account.

Block 1 is part of the 30 ECTS minor Cross-border Migration, Governance & Security, but it can also be followed as a stand-alone 15 ECTS programme. It offers an excellent foundation for anyone interested in migration from a global and multidisciplinary perspective.
