Sustainability issues represent a crucial topic for future professionals. But how does one tackle complex sustainability challenges? On Thursday, 3rd April 2025, Professional Doctorate (PD) candidates from the Leisure, Tourism and Hospitality (LTH) sector gathered at Hotel Management School Leeuwarden for a themed day focused on sustainability.

The Professional Doctorate programme offers candidates a customised research and design programme to tackle complex practical challenges. The programme focuses on applied research and enables candidates to solve real-life problems. The Graduate Network, a partnership of seven Dutch universities of applied sciences within the LTH domain, facilitates this programme. Although a PD is equivalent to a PhD in terms in academic level, the emphasis here lies on practice-oriented research.

Practice-oriented approach

As part of the educational programme 'Current Issues in LTH', an entire day is dedicated annually to sustainability. This year, Elena Cavagnaro, Professor of Sustainability in Hospitality and Tourism at NHL Stenden, took charge of organising the event. She collaborated with Frans Melissen, Transversal Professor of Sustainability Transitions at Breda University of Applied Sciences.

"Within the PD programme, we help candidates to better understand sustainability issues, recognise the sustainability implications of their PD research, and develop practical solutions," explains Cavagnaro.

Knowledge sharing and collaboration

During the themed day, candidates shared their reflections on articles selected by Frans and Elena. They discussed how insights from these articles could be applied to the practical questions central to their PD research. The collegial discussion generated new ideas and solutions for a more sustainable future.
