In August, New Scientist announced the list of 15 nominated scientists who could win the Wetenschapstalent 2023 prize. Public votes and the verdict of a jury ensured that Vincent finished in the top three. The remaining candidates besides Vincent were Bernadette (the eventual winner) and Sofie Claerhout, researcher in forensic genetics at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven.
"Very cool that I finished in the top three," Vincent responded to the news. "It was already an honour for me to be selected among 14 top academic researchers, but a place in the top three is of course even nicer. It is a good opportunity to show our research on new biopolymers and plastic recycling methods to a larger audience. I hope we can contribute to a more positive view of plastics."
Rising star
At the end of last year, Vincent also received great recognition for his work. From over three hundred nominations worldwide, he was named as one of seventeen 'rising stars' from around the world by scientific journal ACS Materials. Vincent was the only Dutch person to receive this title. He owed this award to his research on the circularity of plastics, including the recycling of 3D-printed plastics.
