International Teacher Education impact team

We support the field of international schools through our knowledge of teaching that embraces diversity, encourages intercultural understanding and nurtures an awareness of global issues and challenges.

We are the ITE Impact Team, leaders in practice-oriented research in the field of international education. Founded in 2024, we are the first research group dedicated to the theory and practice of the international classroom. We support the field of international schools through our knowledge of teaching that embraces diversity, encourages intercultural understanding and nurtures an awareness of global issues and challenges.

Based within ITE, the global center of international teacher training, we support knowledge sharing for regional schools and local international schools, as well as carrying out research projects with hundreds of international schools across 53 countries. As design-based researchers, we believe in co-creating projects with international educators, pre-service teachers and students that lead to transformative innovations for international schools.

We want to collaborate with others as we carry out our own work in designing the future of international education through research and practice.

Mission and Vision

Our Meppel-based research group, the ITE Impact Team is focused on research and transformative innovations that strengthen pedagogy in the international classroom. We aim to support the work of NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences and the Education Academies, the regions we work with and the wider world of international schools, particularly through our practice-oriented research in international education. The flow of knowledge here is reciprocal, and we feed back into our own undergraduate and master's courses in international teacher and leadership training, as well as sharing our own research that is transdisciplinary in scope, collaborative and impact-driven.

We emphasise knowledge of theory and practice for catering to the linguistic, academic and cultural diversity of international school students, as well as students in schools in our contemporary pluralistic societies. Through published research and innovative professional development, we create a space for discourse around international teacher education.

ITE, Meppel is the center of international teacher training, and we want to work with others across the field of international education to engage in shared discourse through communities of inquiry. As a public institution, we believe strongly in reciprocity and believe we benefit by sharing our knowledge, while learning from others, so that together we can shape resources and research in the evolving field of international schools.

Research Agenda

Practice-oriented research for the international classroom is always the focus, but our group explores big questions in global education around multilingualism and translanguaging; emerging educational technologies; sustainability education; play as a pathway of imagination; decoloniality; innovations in assessment and culturally responsive teaching. We are interested in design-based research that contributes to change in international education, so that international schools can work towards their ideals of spreading intercultural understanding, a sustainable future for our planet and human flourishing for all regardless of background.

Collaboration

ITE collaborates with over 400 schools across more than 50 countries, which include public, private, and public-private bilingual and international schools. Our core collaboration is with this field, but we work closely with the Dutch International Schools network, the Educational Collaborative for International Schools (ECIS) and various universities in the Netherlands and across the globe. We are always interested in discovering more networks of international educators who are passionate about shaping the theory and practice of international schooling.

Knowledge Circle Team

The research group has a professor Dr. Callum Philbin. He is the head of the research group. Our researchers are all experienced educators and leaders from the field of international education, and work across our ITE programme, as well as supporting teachers in classrooms around the world.

Team members

Connection with education

We work closely with our undergraduate programmes in international teacher training: ITEPS and ITESS, as well as our master’s: MITE. Many of the research team lecture across all three courses, and regularly work with colleagues on curriculum development and professional development. Additionally, all support pre-service teachers working in international schools, as well as supporting colleagues involved in other educational courses at NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences. We work closely as a community with our network of over 400 international schools across more than 50 countries to support transformative innovations in teaching and learning.
