Research Professorship

Under the HBO (Higher Professional Education) system, teaching, research and valorisation share an equal position. Research is one of the three key pillars of NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences, alongside internationalisation and PBL. Research is hugely important to stimulating the investigative and inquisitive attitude of students.

The NHL Stenden Research professorship helps institutions of higher professional education in general, and NHL Stenden in particular, to organise education and teaching in such a way that the research abilities of students are developed and encouraged. Research is one of the three priority professorships at NHL Stenden and is positioned within the Education, Service & Research department.

Support for degree programmes

The principal themes are:

  • The relationship and the reciprocal influence between social constructivism and research, in collaboration with the PBL professorship

  • The diversity, practical relevance and methodical integrity of research at NHL Stenden

  • The development of research skills at each degree programme

  • The research on the NHL Stenden sites, in collaboration with the Internationalisation professorship

  • The role of research in shaping curiosity at the degree programmes offered by NHL Stenden and thereby the skills development of its students.

Position within NHL Stenden

Research is one of NHL Stenden’s priority professorships and is positioned within the Education, Services & Research (ESR) Department.

Knowledge network team

The professorship is led by Dr Herman Blom, who is the head of the knowledge network. The knowledge network consists of two members of staff who also work at the Centre of Expertise. The research that they carry out for the professorship often forms part of their regular activities at NHL Stenden.

Centre of Expertise

Since 2014, the Research and Statistics Learning and Consultancy Centre had played a vital role in promoting the expertise of lecturers and excellence programmes for students. This Centre of Expertise is part of the new professorship and will be strengthened by the establishment of a new (digital) platform: A type of Facebook for students conducting research, lecturers and PhD candidates.
