‘Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world” (Mandela, 2003).
This minor will give you exposure to a different cultural environment in which teachers are operating. This will require you to pay close attention to your cultural sensitivity as experience teaches us that the socio economic and cultural realities in The Netherlands and South Africa are very different. We believe that this is the true value of this minor: to broaden your scope and explore the challenges and opportunities of education in South Africa.
This experience, we are sure, will equip you with an ability to work more effectively in culturally diverse settings and ensure that each child’s unique potential is unleashed.
You will be working with different stakeholders to develop a product that will solve a real life issues with regards to language use in schools that will enable leaners to use their own language to develop as optimally as possible.

You actively contribute to sustainable innovation within the educational domain by stimulating inclusive language use. This means that children within education and beyond can use all their languages to develop as optimally as possible. This way you increase their chances of successfully participating in society (now and later).
You will methodically carry out design research aimed at a relevant real-life issue of an educational institution and/or another social institution in the Netherlands and/or abroad within one of the following themes:
a. including language use and (world) citizenship,

b. language and multilingualism didactics,

c. encouraging active and passive written language in formal and   informal settings,
d. application of digital tools in the multilingual context.

You specialize in one of these themes by conducting the research.

  • within an (international) learning community,
  • from a broader theoretical framework,
  • on micro, meso and/or macro level where you connect the various levels,
  • in the social context and from socio-cultural, socio-geographical, political and historical perspectives,
  • at regional, national and international level,
  • possibly aimed at an age-specific target group,
  • and according to a subject-specific methodology.
