The minor Placemaking emphasizes on a collaborative process by which we can re-shape our public realm in order to create value, and contribute to the quality of life and livability of a place. The minor Placemaking facilitates creative patterns of use, paying particular attention to the physical, cultural, and social identities that define a place and support its ongoing evolution. Its overall purpose is to create meaningful placemaking concepts that contribute to people's health, happiness, and well-being. Placemaking designs that not only pay attention to the physical components of a place but also to experiences that keep a place lively, attractive and interactive for different target groups in the long term.

Minor content

The placemaking minor uses the design thinking approach in which you as a student start creating meaningful places in a self-directed and co-creative way. You are largely responsible for your own learning path, in which you are supported by coaches and experts from the field in achieving the goals you have set.

By working on your facilitation skills and through a learning mindset, we want to enable you to come to placemaking concepts together with others, that are of value for a customer and for end-users. In short to create value for different stakeholders.

By exploring the placemaking principles and by visiting inspiring examples in the field of placemaking, we will work on transforming public space and in this way give more meaning to a place for different users. You are challenged to co-create with end-users within this design process. We will work as much as possible in the ‘space’ of the placemaking projects themselves, in order to be in close contact with the relevant context and issues of that environment. This means that we do not set up the ateliers within the school building as standard.

Because we are convinced that you should experience placemaking in practice, we think it is important to visit inspiring placemaking concepts and to connect people from practice to the minor. That is why we organize a 2-day field trip in the Netherlands. The costs for this are +/- 200 euros per person.
