The Teaching and Learning in Upper Primary elective prepares students for the unique joys and challenges of teaching children between 9 - 14 years of age. Through a series of mini courses, focusing on a range of topics including subject area content knowledge and methodology, pedagogical approaches, and pre-adolescent and adolescent cognitive and social development, students will have extensive opportunities to explore and engage with the exciting options for teaching and learning with this age group.
Minor content
Students will develop the necessary skills and content knowledge to create successful learning environments upper primary. Through a design-based program, students will be prepared to work with (pre) adolescent learners. Participants will: Develop and adapt learning experiences, assessments, and unit plans that reflect an understanding of this specific age group Participate in an in-depth analysis of the social-emotional, cognitive, and behavioural development of upper primary learners Identify relevant age group milestones and benchmarks Recognize student needs and means of both supporting students individually and differentiating to support all learners Explore the role of engagement, motivation, and creativity in upper primary education.

Structure of the minor
30 ECTs This elective will consist of both theoretical and practical components. Inclusive and equitable educational practices (including but not limited to Universal Design for Learning and Culturally Responsive Teaching) Topics will include: Humanities (literacy and social studies) Mathematics STEAM (including elements of media literacy) Relationship, mental health, well-being, and sex education Fostering a positive, constructive classroom culture with high expectations for all learners Integration of educational technology to support learning and foster inquiry Digital citizenship Assessment for and of learning Field trips, guest speakers, discussions, individual and group projects, contact with the professional field, and collaboration across subject areas and cohorts within ITEps.
