Once you've enrolled at NHL Stenden, you'll need to pay your tuition fees. There are two types of tuition fee: the statutory tuition fee and the institutional tuition fee, and different tariffs apply to the two fees. You can read more about which type of tuition fee applies to you below.
Statutory tuition fees
Institutional tuition fees
Additional info
As an EU student, if you’re studying two degrees, you only pay statutory tuition fees for one of them. You’ll need to request Proof of Paid tuition fees (in Dutch,a BBC, Bewijs Betaald Collegegeld) and submit this to your second place of study.
For non-EU students, different tuition fee regulations apply. Please get in touch with us for more information.
- If you go on to do another bachelor's degree, you will pay institutional tuition fees.
- If you go on to do a bachelor's degree in education or healthcare after finishing your first degree, you will pay statutory tuition fees for you second degree.
- As an EU student, if you follow two programmes simultaneously, once you have graduated from your first programme, you will need to pay the statutory tuition fee to finish the second programme. NB your registration in the second programme may not have been interrupted.
If you follow a minor at a different university or university of applied sciences, you might need proof of paid tuition fees to show you have paid your fees. Basically, you select 'proof of paid tuition fees’ as payment method when you enter your payment details for the other institution.
You'll also need proof of paid tuition fees if you are an EU student studying two degrees at the same time but at different educational institutions. You only need to pay tuition fees to one institution and you should be able to select ‘proof of paid tuition fees’ as your payment method for the second institution. In Dutch, proof of paid tuition fees is called a Bewijs Betaald Collegegeld (BBC).
No. Your employer (or a benefits agency) cannot pay your fees directly. Payments are person-specific so you will need to authorize the digital payment to NHL Stenden yourself. (You do this through Studielink and will need your DigiD) Once you have done this, you can request a Statement of Tuition Fees so that you can claim the tuition fees back from your employer or benefit agency. You can request the statement online.
Yes. If you unenroll before you actually finish your degree, you can get a reimbursement. You'll no longer need to pay tuition fees as of the first full month after you have unenrolled. This means that you will be reimbursed for any months you have already paid for, providing there are no outstanding payments.
If enrolment is cancelled in July or August then there is no reduction in the amount of fees to be paid* unless it is due to the death of the student or the academic director has given permission for a reduction. Reimbursement is made after the refund period has expired (56 days after the last direct debit).
*a reduction is a reduction/concession in the amount owed
You can change your bank details using your Studielink account. Just login and go to the tab ‘Payment overview’ to change your bank account number and other bank and direct debit details.
Check Studielink Q&A for more details.
If you’re not following any classes but you are sitting exams at NHL Stenden, then you pay € 10,335 (this is the institutional tuition fee for the academic year 2026-2027).

Paying your fees
Log in to your Studielink account and fill in your payment details.
If you are a non-EU student, you will have to pay the tuition fees in full in a single payment.
If you are an EU-student and have a SEPA account, you can set up a direct debit. Check your Studielink account for details.
Tuition fees are an annual fee, so you pay tuition fees for each new academic year or new enrolment.
As a first-year, non-EU student, you'll need to pay the full amount of the tuition fees as a lump sum in a single payment. By the time you enrol in your second year, you'll have opened a SEPA account which means you can then set up a direct debit.
If you are an EU student and have a SEPA account, you can set up a direct debit for monthly instalments. Check your Studielink account for details.
You can pay in monthly instalments as long as it’s through a direct debit that automatically goes off your account on a specified date each month. You'll need to have a SEPA bank account (it doesn't have to be a Dutch account). You set up the payment plan using your Studielink account.
Remember! Tuition fees are an annual fee, so you pay tuition fees for each new academic year or new enrolment. When you start a new academic year in September, you need to set up a new payment plan for that year.
I start my studies in September. When do my tuition fees payments go off my account?
If you register before 1 September, the payment plan is divided into 9 monthly instalments, usually collected around the 25th of each month, and with the last payment in May.
If you register during September, the first payment may be omitted depending on how quickly the bank processes the payment instructions. If this is the case, the total amount will be divided into 8 instalments, starting in October.
I start my studies in February (or another mid-year moment). When do my tuition fees payments go off my account?
If you start in February or another time during the academic year, you can divide the total tuition fees over the remaining payment months (e.g. January, February, March, April, and May).
If you register during the course of a month, the payment for that month may be omitted depending on how quickly the bank processes the payment instructions. If this is the case, the omitted amount will then be added to the first possible instalment.
What happens if I miss paying an instalment of my tuition fees?
1. Digital reminder
If you have a direct debit set up but not enough money on your account for the transaction, then you will first get a digital reminder. You then have 7 days to pay the amount due. You need to transfer the money yourself to NHL Stenden.
Transfer the amount directly from your account to NHL Stenden stating your name and student number in the description using the following details:
- Account name: Stichting NHL Stenden Hogeschool
- BIC/Swift code: INGBNL2A
- IBAN: NL26INGB0007942688
- Bank address: ING Bank, Postbus 1800, 1000 BV Amsterdam, Netherlands
If you have any questions about overdue payments, please contact [email protected].
2. Final demand
After that first 7 days, you get another reminder but it’s a final demand, known as a notice of default. If you don't pay the outstanding amount within 15 days from the date of that letter, then the matter goes to a debt collector. Your enrolment at NHL Stenden will be withdrawn as of the start of the second month following the date of the notice of default. Once you've paid the tuition fees in full (ie both what you owed and the remaining amount for the academic year), you can put in a request through studielink to re-enrol. This is in line with article 7.42, paragraph 2 of the Higher Education and Research Act.
Remember, if you’re not enrolled as a student, you:
- cannot use our educational facilities
- won’t receive a graduation certificate (if applicable)
- may not be entitled to student financing
- may have your student travel card withdrawn (if applicable)
- may have your residence permit withdrawn if you are an international student with specifically a study residence permit as NHL Stenden is obliged to deregister you with the immigration service (IND).
NB terminating your enrolment does not waive your financial obligations and you will still have to pay the tuition fees in full.
3. Letter from the debt collector
Once the matter is transferred to a debt collection agency, you will also be liable for extrajudicial collection costs and VAT. The extrajudicial costs are calculated according to the scale below:
- 15% of the principal claim on the first €2,500 with a minimum of €40
- 10% of the principal claim on the next €2,500
- 5% of the principal claim on the next €5,000
- 1% of the principal claim on the next €190,000
- 0,5% on any excess of the principal amount up to a maximum of €6,775
Important! In addition to the measures above, you will not be able to re-enrol at NHL Stenden for any study programme if the tuition fees for the previous academic year have not been paid in full.
How can I make an objection?
If you disagree with the consequences given above, you can send an objection to the Executive Board explaining why. Your objection must be sent within 6 weeks from the date of the letter. These are the contact details.
You need to pay as quickly as possible as you risk being deregistered from your studies if you don't pay.
Quite simply, no. You can pay your tuition fees as a lump sum from any bank account.
If you are an EU student and have a SEPA bank account (it doesn't have to be a Dutch account), you may be able to set up a direct debit to pay your tuition fees on a monthly basis across the academic year. You can do this through your Studielink account.
If you are a non-EU student, payments are person-specific so you will need to authorize the digital payment to NHL Stenden yourself. You do this through Studielink and will need your DigiD.
If you are an EU student and your parent or guardian is going to pay your tuition fees, you can indicate this in Studielink. Once you have completed the payment details, you'll receive an email with a payment link. Send this payment link to the person paying the fees. They can then fill in their payment details so that the tuition fees can be debited accordingly.
As an EU student, you can indicate in Studielink that someone else is going to pay your tuition fees.
If you are a non-EU student and under 18, you'll need to pay the whole amount in a single payment. Once you have turned 18, you can open your own bank account. Make sure this is a SEPA account so that you can then choose to pay your annual tuition fees either in one go or in instalments.
