The DuPoncho project is a collaboration between our partner Flaaks and NHL Stenden (more specific; professorship Transformational Media), with the aim of promoting sustainability in outdoor sports.
It focuses on testing the DuPoncho, a 100% biodegradable linen changing poncho, for athletes dealing with the lack of changing facilities on-site. Through applied research at a sports event, insights are gathered to improve functionality, user experience, and brand communication. The project is subsidized by the taskforce for applied research SIA in collaboration with Innofest.
Motivation
Outdoor athletes, especially cyclists, often face challenges when changing clothes due to a lack of proper facilities. This results in discomfort and impractical solutions. To address this issue, Flaaks developed the DuPoncho, a sustainable, functional garment that allows athletes to change comfortably in any outdoor setting.
The demand for eco-friendly sports products is growing as traditional sports clothing is often made from synthetic materials with a high environmental impact. The DuPoncho, made from 100% biodegradable linen, provides a circular and sustainable alternative for conscious athletes.
To optimize the product and test its brand strategy, Flaaks, in collaboration with the professorship Transformational media, is conducting a real-world study at a sports event. This practical approach allows direct interaction with the target audience, gathering valuable feedback on functionality and messaging. The study not only enhances product development but also raises awareness about sustainability in sports.
Approach
The project team approaches this by combining a practical approach with academic expertise. In collaboration with students from NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences, the team conducts tests at a sports event where the DuPoncho is directly tested by the target audience. Students observe its use, conduct interviews, and gather feedback through creative methods such as changing competitions and card-sorting sessions.
This allows the team to gain immediate insights into user experiences and the effectiveness of the brand messaging. The collected data is then used to further optimize both the product design and marketing strategy. At the same time, it provides students with valuable experience in applying sustainability research in a real-world setting.
Project team
The project involves a researcher from the Transformational Media research group and employees of Flaaks, working alongside students from the Media Concepts & Sustainability minor. Together, they focus on refining the product, brand strategy, and communication approach.
