Talma professorship on Living, Well-being, and old-age care

Ideally, we would all grow old in good health. However, things often turn out differently in reality. Older people are increasingly active in old age. At the same time, the number of older people requiring care is increasing, which requires appropriate, loving care that meets patients’ needs. The Talma professorship on Living, Well-being and Old-age Care has therefore undertaken the courageous task of finding creative solutions using the power of innovation.

Social issues

With an increasingly ageing population, a shortage on the labour market and more limited financing options available, appropriate care seems a more difficult thing to achieve. This has an impact on care of the elderly. The Talma professorship focuses on providing support for vulnerable elderly people, their informal carers and professional healthcare providers in the area of living, care and well-being.

The percentage of chronic conditions is rising, which is a factor that increases as people get older. These conditions not only relate to physical conditions. Well-being and ability to function can likewise be hindered by psychological problems and disorders. No less than 70 percent of the limitations in terms of self-reliance among 85-years-olds can be attributed to a limitation in cognitive functioning: this requires innovative solutions.

The questions that the Talma professorship asks and answers stem from issues prevalent in society and problems identified by professional practice, such as: how can loneliness be identified? Is the use of an au pair a realistic option in old-age care? What is the role of professionals coming out of higher professional education (HBO) in care of the elderly? The Talma professorship’s strength lies in being willing to stray from well-trodden paths and developing new approaches to problems.

Professional practice

Who do we work with?

The Talma professorship provides advice, develops, implements and conducts research into innovative applied concepts. The professorship’s work is always tailored to a specific situation and always takes place based on the current state of the art. We are committed working with you on developing innovative solutions to the wicked problems of the workplace.

The Talma professorship was set up within the Healthcare & Well-being Institute of NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences in 2005. The Talma professorship is a unique professorship that is in part funded by the A.S. Talma Foundation. The foundation is committed to actively applying knowledge gained from research in education and in professional practice.

The projects of the professorship take place within professional practice and are carried out by members of the knowledge network in collaboration with students under the authority of the (associate) professor. Within the professorship, students are given the opportunity to become acquainted with the implementation of innovative projects and research.

The following issues are the principal focus of our projects and research, each of which represents a topical issue in old-age care:

  •  experience-based/people-oriented care

  •  care and support at home

  • the development of the role of the (HBO) professional

  • dementia in people with intellectual disabilities

  • dementia in a hospital setting

A.S. Talma Stichting

Aritius Sybrandus Talma (1864-1916) was a socially-minded pastor, who later rose to become the Minister of Agriculture, Trade and Industry in the Dutch government. As a minister, he pioneered social insurance legislation, such as the Labour Act in 1912 and the Invalidity and Old Age Act. His work was a source of inspiration for many, including for the movement that was committed to providing proper care for the elderly. In 1928, the first ‘Talma Rustoord’ (Talma care home), was established, where the elderly were able to enjoy ‘care until the end’.

Applied research

We are engaged in research and in the acquisition, implementation and dissemination of knowledge. Professional lecturers actively contribute to teaching and educational innovation. The emphasis of the professorship within NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences is on knowledge development.

We carry out applied research in collaboration with our regional healthcare partners, with the aim of sharing, disseminating and applying knowledge both in an educational and industry setting. Through our research and the dissemination of results, we contribute to the development of evidence-based practice.

Research by students

If you are looking to do research at a healthcare or welfare organisations during your studies as well as work with and receive supervision from professional researchers, then the Talma professorship is the place for you.

By doing research on a specific issue, you will be able to learn a great deal about it in a short period of time. The professorship regularly conducts research on its own initiative or on behalf of other parties that you, as a student, can take part in.
