The first SDG focuses on reducing poverty in all its forms, which is very much needed. One in five Dutch households face poverty and struggle with serious debts. This is a major social problem and one which we are keen to tackle at NHL Stenden UAS through sustainable student-led projects aimed at eradicating poverty and supported by our own students and members of staff.

Education
Within the study programmes that we offer at NHL Stenden, we have devoted attention to SDG 1 through minors in which students actively work on raising awareness in the area of poverty as well as on methods to tackle poverty through entrepreneurship.

Research and collaboration
At NHL Stenden, we actively seek out connections with professional practice, set up unique partnerships and use refreshing methodologies to carry out research. This not only takes place within the walls of our lecture halls but mainly outside that setting in an inspiring environment as well as occasionally in professional practice itself. This involves working on fostering sustainable and vital regions together with those around us. The ‘Gewoon bij Truus’ project, for example, sees our students working with residents, businesses and organisations to develop sustainable solutions to eradicate poverty.
