Logistics Management course overview
With the Logistics Management degree at NHL Stenden, you become a supply chain management professional with an eye for the circular economy. Through our educational concept, Design-Based Education (DBE), you work in small teams of students, teachers, researchers and industry professionals. You tackle current, real-life issues developing and adapting your visions and ideas to form a solid solution. And you gain yet more practical experience during your internship in your final year.

The programme for Logistics Management
In the first two years of the programme you develop a broad understanding of the industry which you then get to apply during your internship in your third year. You also choose your specialisation in your third year before going on to your final year. You complete your degree with a graduation project within a company of your choice.
As this degree is a management course, you’ll also develop the skills needed to be a manager. These skills are integrated into the programme and developed through the practical assignments you do as well as during your internship. You also work with your study coach throughout your degree so that you get to develop your talents and work on the extra skills you need.
Introduction to the industry
The first year is your introduction to the industry. You work in groups with fellow students on projects such as starting a business, giving advice on delivering goods or optimising processes.
You cover two main subjects per term, giving you the basic knowledge you need during and after your studies to solve and answer logistical issues. You learn about key topics such as:
- Supply Chain Management
- Operational management
- Purchasing
- Introduction logistics
- Warehousing
- Transport and inventory management
Throughout your studies, you work on your personal development, joining specific workshops in each module. And of course, you get personal help with your study coach at your side whenever you need help.
More in-depth study
The second year sees you gaining more in-depth knowledge of relevant topics in the field of logistics. You work mainly in an international context on assignments covering supply chain risk management, lean six sigma, export management and e-commerce. This gives you insight into how organisations need to act within a dynamic environment and what the importance is of collaborating with other organisations in the chain.
Internship and practical experience
This is the year you really get submerged in practical experience with an internship in the Netherlands or abroad. It also gives you an idea of the various career paths you could take and helps you discover your best fit.
Minors
In this year, you also take a minor, a subject you can later specialise in, such as Circular Entrepreneurship. Read more about the options available and where you can take your minors in the section below on minors and specialisations.
Major subject and graduation project
In your final year you get to explore major trends in logistics and production by majoring in Supply Chain Innovation and Change. Taking on the role of a consultant, you and your project group advise clients from industry on solutions to their working problems. You learn to analyse processes in a structured way and use the skills and knowledge within your project group to develop creative solutions. On completion, you will be equipped with the insights and aptitude needed to launch your career as a consultant advising companies in different areas of logistics.
You finish your studies with a graduation project within a company. You may, for instance, be researching the effect of a new packaging machine on operations in the warehouse or improving stock management by implementing a central warehouse.
Minors and specialisations for Logistics Management
In your third year of Logisitics Management, you get to specialise by taking a number of minors.
Minors are electives in which you focus on a specific subject or expand your knowledge by taking an additional subject. This allows you to truly take charge of your education by ‘customising’ your course.
You can take these minors on the Leeuwarden campus or at one of the NHL Stenden Grand Tour locations in South Africa, Bali or Thailand. You can also choose from minors offered by other courses and universities of applied sciences – this is all part of broadening your academic skills.
- Circular Entrepreneurship (Emmen, the Netherlands)
You work in small groups to set up a company based on your own circular product. You finish the minor with a 3D printed prototype of your product and a sound business plan for your start-up. - Mindful Leadership (Bali or Thailand)
