What you can expect from the Tourism Management programme

Right from the start of the Tourism Management programme, you’ll tackle real-life challenges from the tourism industry. Working in small project groups, you’ll take on assignments from organisations that involve, for instance, destination research, developing future-proof destinations, and creating impactful visitor experiences for different target groups.

You’ll explore the latest trends in tourism and develop skills in product innovation, entrepreneurship, online and offline destination marketing, and communication. The programme also covers storytelling, management skills, AI in the travel industry, research and impactful entrepreneurship. From your first year, you actively work on finding your place in the industry. By choosing the projects you want to work on, taking part in industry events, going on study trips and attending inspiring guest lectures, you’ll steadily build your network and profile as a tourism professional.

The impact of tourism

Our Tourism Management degree focuses on sustainable tourism. You learn to prioritise the wellbeing of the community and the local environment at a destination. You also explore how tourism impacts different cultures and the economic interests involved. Commercial activities are aligned as much as possible with the sustainable development of destinations, and you develop a strong foundation in social responsibility and ‘all-inclusive’ solutions.

Tourism Management in practice

Through this Tourism Management degree, you get to study in an innovative and international environment with students from across the world. You'll discover the effect of tourism on different cultures and the environment, and the economic interests that play a role. Right from day one, you get assignments from real clients in the tourism industry, working on current issues they are facing.

This method of working (Design-Based Education) means you learn to draw on feedback to adapt your ideas and become more flexible, while also developing your teamwork and leadership skills. You could be developing an innovative product, finding ways to promote a tourist destination, greening a holiday park, making a tourism attraction appealing for a particular target group, or developing an effective online marketing campaign – or all of the above! It all adds to you developing your insights into the sector and learning to create solutions for real-world situations in the tourism industry.

Gain international experience

During the Tourism Management degree, you get to put your passion for travel into practice with field trips, minor subjects and internships abroad. Our participation in RUN-EU means you can join Short Advanced Programmes and carry out projects with partner institutions in Europe. You can also go to one of the NHL Stenden’s Grand Tour locations in South Africa, Bali or Thailand in your third year. Or you can go on an exchange to a partner institution and delve into a totally new way of studying. With over 100 different minors on offer through NHL Stenden and held at locations all over the world, you're sure to find the perfect specialisation, whether it’s focusing on Heritage Experience Management, Outdoor Leadership and Adventure Tourism or Destinations in Transition (to name just a few). It all helps prepare you to work anywhere in the world when you’ve graduated – and gets you thinking about how you can travel sustainably and responsibly.

The reasons to study at NHL Stenden

The things that make a difference in the world often start as ideas from people daring to question what others assume. At NHL Stenden, you work in mixed groups so you can use each other's perspectives to unravel unobvious choices. Through real-life projects you learn by doing and this, combined with your internship, truly gives you a head start on your career. With our international opportunities and study environment, you develop a global network while the extracurricular activities you can pick up mean you develop talents that help you explore beyond your studies. While this is all great for your future, we know you also need to focus on your time as a student. Which is why we aim to make NHL Stenden your home away from home, a community where you’re known by your name, so you can be the person you truly are. For us, that makes you original. And it makes NHL Stenden, home of the originals.
