Studieopbouw

In the course, participants tackle current criminological issues, and guest lecturers from the field provide inspiring lectures. Participants learn how to analyse a criminological issue and develop an appropriate approach to the problem. The course does not include exams; knowledge is applied in the products that participants create for the program and/or the field.

In Criminal Mindhunters, we examine not only what criminals do, but why they do it and how understanding criminal behavior helps prevent future crime.
To understand criminal behavior, criminologists rely on theoretical frameworks.
These theories attempt to explain why crime occurs and under what conditions it becomes more likely. It does not explain everything. Criminal behavior emerges from the interaction between individual characteristics, social environments, and situational opportunities.
While solving crimes is essential, one of the most effective strategies for improving public safety is preventing crime before it occurs.
During the course you will be investigating a crime which had an impact on policy making. The second half of the course you will be working in groups.
Understanding criminological theory is only the first step. In this course, participants will apply these theories to real-world problems. Working in teams, participants must analyze a specific crime problem and develop a tool or program aimed at prevention.
Examples may include:
•    a cybercrime awareness campaign
•    a school program addressing bullying
•    a community strategy to reduce vandalism

During the course we will have guest lecturers and visits to organisations. You will have a personal choice to visit any organisation of interest. We will meet two times a week but further you need to take initiative and efforts to develop your own personal learning journey. The teaching method is programmatic and testing will be accordingly. Around 30 participants have followed this program in English. This is only offered in Assen, Drenthe.

To conclude:
Understanding the criminal mind is not about fascination with crime.
Because in the end, the most effective justice system is not only one that solves crimes but one that works to prevent them from happening in the first place.
