NHL Stenden ranked number 2 Best Large University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands
NHL Stenden has been ranked second in the category Best Large University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands. This makes our institution the only uas in the north of the Netherlands in the top 3 listing in the Keuzegids 2027. What’s more, 36 of our study programmes have been rated as Top Programmes, a new record for our university of applied sciences.
The high ranking reaffirms exactly what we work hard towards every day: providing personal student coaching, preparing students for the professional field, and creating a good and motivating learning environment. Marc Otto, chair of NHL Stenden’s Executive Board, reiterates this: “It’s what lies behind this ranking that’s important. Students who know they’re not a number here. Who have drive and ambition and a confidence in themselves that carries over to the labour market. That this is how they actually feel, makes this ranking really valuable.”

As well as the general ranking, the Keuzegids also designates Top Programmes, studies that have scored so high they rank amongst the best in the Netherlands. This year, no less than 36 of NHL Stenden’s study programmes have been designated a Top Programme. It’s a record number, with the programmes covering a range of fields, including technology (such as Industrial Engineering & Management), maritime (like Ocean Technology) and education (such as International multiple teacher education degrees).
Rooted in the region, a focus on the world
The high ranking is also good for the region. Northern Netherlands is facing a double challenge with an ageing population and employers keen to recruit well-trained talent ready for the professional field. A strong university of applied sciences plays an important role here. NHL Stenden prepares students for the local and international labour market and offers them opportunities to go beyond their own knowledge and abilities. Marc: “Students need to be able to study and build a future here. And just as importantly, they need to be able to work in different positions and collaborate across national borders. Whether they’re based in our own region or further afield.”
Student opinions and programme successes
The Keuzegids compares universities of applied sciences based on student opinions, programme success and the link to professional practice. NHL Stenden's high ranking shows that students appreciate the quality of education offered across the board. Whereas in previous years, the university of applied sciences was consistently ranked as number four, we’ve now pushed past the number three to a position just under the ranking leader Zuyd University of Applied Sciences. The success is thanks to the overall score rising a full point to 66.5. A fantastic achievement, says Marc Otto. “This is something we can celebrate together. And it motivates us to continue doing what we're doing. After years of being ranked in the top four, we're now second. It's a reflection of how our students appreciate their university of applied sciences, and that's why we're here.”
